چکیده

The textile processing plants utilize a wide variety of dyes and other chemicals such as acids, bases, salts, detergents, sizes, oxidants, mercerizing and finishing chemicals. Many of these are not retained in the final product and are discharged in the effluent. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the performance of EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed) reactor to treat non-acidifie wastewater. Several experiments using starch and volatile fatty acids as model substrates were conducted. The problems of piston formation were evaluated at a variety of relevant operational conditions, such as substrate concentration, organic and hydraulic loading rates. The results showed that newly grown acidogenic biomass diluted original methanogenic biomass and the granular sludge in the EGSB reactor deteriorated. The piston formation in the EGSB reactor that was fed with non-acidified wastewater occurred due to high growth of acidogenic biomass and high upflow velocity applied in the system.

Expanded granular sludge bed bioreactor in wastewater treatment

The expanded granular sludge bed bioreactor appears today as a cheap, robust and more popular technology because it operates using a fluidized bed, which allows increasing in organic load and in cell retention times, generating higher treatment efficiencies (up to 95 %) and renewable energy (i.e., biogas, biomethane, and biohydrogen). Nevertheless, the efficiency of this bioreactor mainly depen...

Treatment of Wastewater from Purified Terephtalic Acid (PTA) Production in a Two-stage Anaerobic Expanded Granular Sludge Bed System

The wastewater treatment with a two-phase expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) system for anaerobic degradation of acetate, benzoate, terephtalate and p-toluate from purified terephtalic acid (PTA) production was studied. The feasibility and effectiveness of the system was evaluated in terms of organic oxidation by chemical oxygen demand (COD), gas production, bacterial adaptability and stabilit...

Microbial community structure and dynamics in anaerobic fluidized‐bed and granular sludge‐bed reactors: influence of operational temperature and reactor configuration

Methanogenic community structure and dynamics were investigated in two different, replicated anaerobic wastewater treatment reactor configurations [inverted fluidized bed (IFB) and expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB)] treating synthetic dairy wastewater, during operating temperature transitions from 37°C to 25°C, and from 25°C to 15°C, over a 430-day trial. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (...

Feasibility of expanded granular sludge bed reactors for the anaerobic treatment of low-strength soluble wastewaters.

The application of the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor for the anaerobic treatment of low-strength soluble wastewaters using ethanol as a model substrate was investigated in laboratory-scale reactors at 30oC. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was above 80% at organic loading rates up to12 g COD/L . d with influent concentrations as low as 100 to 200 mg COD/L. These res...
